Working in Spain: Self-Employment

A self-employed worker is someone who works independently, and is not linked to a company by a contract.
A series of formalities must be completed to start work as a self-employed worker:
- Declaración Censal de Inicio de Actividad [Business Start-up declaration] in the local provincial Delegación de Hacienda [Tax Agency].
- Registration with Social Security under the Régimen Especial de Autónomos [Special Self-Employment Scheme] with the local provincial Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social [Social Security General Treasury].
- Registration with the relevant professional board, when this is required to exercise a profession.
- If premises are opened, a municipal licence must be requested for this and the Autonomous Community labour authority must be notified of the opening of an centre where work is carried out.
The State Public Employment Service and the Public Employment Services of the Autonomous Communities offer assistance to unemployed workers who wish to become self-employed:
Applications for these grants must be submitted to the Provincial Directorates of the Public State Employment Service or the Autonomous Community Employment Services.
