Moving to Spain: Finding Accommodation

The accommodation options available to you when you plan a move to Spain...

Renting

If you want to rent a flat during your stay in Spain, the best thing to do is to look in the accommodation sections of all newspapers. You could also go to estate agents, the Internet or the estate agent listings in the Yellow Pages.

While you are looking for somewhere to live, you could go to a Tourist Office which will be able to give you a list of temporary accommodation available.

A useful aid when looking for a flat is the Sociedad Pública de Alquiler [Public Rental Society], which is attached to the Ministry of Housing and whose website offers rental accommodation at guaranteed prices.

The Autonomous Communities, in conjunction with the Instituto de la Juventud [Youth Institute], have a Bolsa de Vivienda Joven en Alquiler [Young People’s Rental Accommodation Exchange] at lower than market prices for young people aged 18 to 35. The Programa Emancipación Joven [Young People’s Emancipation Programme] also offers help and advice on accommodation and employment for that age group.

Buying a Property

Many estate agents in the EEA deal with the purchase of Spanish properties at present. You can contact a local estate agent in Spain. If you want to stay abreast of market prices for new housing, the Sociedad de Tasación [Property Valuation Society] carries out a comprehensive market survey which analyses new private housing developments being built in all the provincial capitals.

The Ministry has introduced a state housing plan to facilitate access to housing for social groups that are seeking accommodation for the first time. The Ministry also provides information on prices of private, officially protected and rental accommodation, and information on procedures and legal aspects relating to the purchase and rental of property.

Some Autonomous Communities offer young people’s services with general information on property rental and buying-selling, specialised legal information, press information on rented and shared accommodation etc.

The price of housing in Spain has fallen between 8-10% from the optimal prices.
